Portfolio Energy Optimization Associate
Rocky Mountain Institute is seeking candidates to fill an Associate position within our Buildings Practice’s Portfolio Energy Optimization initiative. We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in energy analytics, committed to becoming an EnergyPlus expert, and leveraging computer programming to automate energy simulation and financial analysis.
Portfolio Energy Optimization
Portfolio Energy Optimization is creating a disruptive and scalable approach to commercial building retrofits that have been left behind by the traditional retrofit approach, driving deep financial and energy savings in this critical sector. We are developing software tools, working with portfolio owners, and directly testing and evaluating new technologies that can dramatically increase the efficiency of portfolios of operating buildings.
A primary focus of the initiative is developing a software tool that enables building owners to know all investable opportunities and their cash flows for their properties on an ongoing basis at a market accepted price point and timeline. To this end, we have leveraged tools such as EnergyPlus and Params/Model Kit along with a host of custom applications to develop a mass customized tool. The software is capable of evaluating a range of building use types, such as retail, office, and warehouse and evaluates a spectrum of potential projects for each building including energy efficiency, storage, generation, and demand control. Roles and Responsibilities
Their primary responsibilities of the Associate will include supporting:
Continued development of Ruby code to automatically generate EnergyPlus input files to evaluate an expanding set of energy and water projects.
Populate databases with common building attributes and project-specific attributes to facilitate mass customization.
Help build new functionality into the tool such as automated quality control procedures, automated reporting, and statistical analysis.
Act as primary point of contact for clients when executing pilot projects.
Project management – manage tasks, budget, and team members associated with executing pilot projects.
Collect data and leverage the PEO tool to identify and evaluate the financial viability of projects for pilot project building(s).
Author and present results summary to client.
The Associate will support RMI efforts to demonstrate, replicate and communicate the success of projects to industry and donor audiences.
This position requires an individual with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with at least 2 years of workforce experience OR a Master's degree (or higher degree).

A graduate degree or equivalent experience in an applicable field such as mechanical, electrical, or energy engineering.
Energy simulation experience. Demonstrated use of EnergyPlus preferred. Existing building modeling preferred.
Field experience: Hands-on experience evaluating HVAC and controls via commissioning, retro-commissioning, or energy auditing.
Design experience: Background in a MEP firm or similar, developing HVAC designs and specifications.
Computer programming: Ruby or C# preferred.
EIT designation, or licensed PE.
AEE Certified Energy Manager.
2+ years of work experience.
