Job Description

The Building Energy Research and Analysis Group within the Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is currently seeking a Building Energy Research Engineer. This position mainly supports the development, adoption, and compliance with residential and non-residential building energy codes. The position involves using building simulation and other analytical tools to model and conduct simulations of building energy systems for high-efficiency residential and commercial buildings and for innovative technologies.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
This position will be assisting project teams with building simulation analysis for building energy codes and standards development as well as high performance building energy analysis. Use of EnergyPlus and OpenStudio simulation software for HVAC and other commercial equipment and appliances, as well as building energy simulation analysis will be an expectation of this position. Additionally, this position may involve large scale building energy simulation analysis using data-oriented programming / scripting languages such as Ruby, R, Perl, and Python on Linux-based computer clusters. The project may involve research on energy efficiency, sustainable design practices, and carbon management strategies.
- Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives.
- Shares results of research with project team members and other stakeholders.
- Contributes to technical reports and peer reviewed papers.

This position can be based in either Richland, WA, or Portland, OR.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences or related field with 2+ years’ experience, or advanced degree.
- Good English writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of energy efficiency strategies for building HVAC, lighting, and envelope systems.
- Experience using building energy modeling software such as DOE2 or EnergyPlus and computer software languages such as Perl or R.
- Experience providing technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience applying statistical methods to research results
- Experience with EnergyPlus simulation software
- Experience with data-oriented programming/scripting languages and other computer software 
- Coursework in energy efficiency, energy-related systems, energy metering technology, energy systems analysis and modeling, building energy simulations, business, economics, water conservation, sustainable development/design, or environmental science
- Building Energy Modeling Professional Certification
- Building commissioning experience
- Building energy auditing experience
- Experience using energy simulation for code compliance or beyond code incentive programs such as LEED or utility programs.
- Experience in software development.
- Willing to travel 5% of the time.

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctorate degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences or related field with 0-2 years’ experience
• Experience providing technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences
• Experience applying statistical methods to research results
• Experience with EnergyPlus simulation software
• Experience with data-oriented programming/scripting languages and other computer software 
• Coursework in energy efficiency, energy-related systems, energy metering technology, energy systems analysis and modeling, building energy simulations, business, economics, water conservation, sustainable development/design, or environmental science is preferred

• Master's degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences or related field with 0-2 years’ experience
• Experience providing technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences
• Experience applying statistical methods to research results
• Experience with EnergyPlus simulation software
• Experience with data-oriented programming/scripting languages and other computer software 
• Coursework in energy efficiency, energy-related systems, energy metering technology, energy systems analysis and modeling, building energy simulations, business, economics, water conservation, sustainable development/design, or environmental science is preferred

3.25 GPA or higher is preferred
