At BuroHappold, we’re passionate about great engineering. And always have been.
We are a holistic engineering practice, where engineers are more than just human calculators, they’re helpers in shaping solutions, making the world a better place to live in.
When it comes to your graduate career, don’t opt for the obvious. Don’t accept the average. Expect the best and work with the best.
We make the vision viable.
What is Energy Analysis?
If you could calculate energy consumption of buildings during early design stages, wouldn’t you use this skill to improve their thermal performance to minimize heating, cooling and lighting costs? That is precisely what Intern Energy Analysts do at BuroHappold. Using state-of-the-art software and deep knowledge in building science, our Analytics team look for the synergetic interactions of passive and active systems to achieve energy efficiency, thermal and visual comfort having in mind the health and wellbeing of building occupants.
As a trusted advisor to our clients, we engage the design process early on and provide data-driven multi-disciplinary solutions. Our approach includes parametric simulations using dynamic thermal modeling, airflow modeling, daylight simulations and thermal comfort analysis. Accurate simulation of proposed mechanical strategies at later stages of design are achieved with in-depth understanding of the systems and using custom modeling tools. Also, energy analysis models are frequently used in green building certification systems such as LEED and energy code compliance at the completion of the design.
The scale of the analysis models on our projects may vary from a single hardware component to a large campus of buildings each with unique design challenges. Our sectors include a higher education and cultural focus along with high performance projects. Our current portfolio includes thirteen net zero energy projects, one Living Building Challenge certified project, and twenty-four LEED Platinum certified projects.
What sort of projects would I work on?
The Tower at the PNC Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA
Designed to be the greenest office building in the world, the Tower at the PNC Plaza is naturally ventilated using double skin façade and solar chimneys designed and analyzed meticulously by our multi-disciplinary team including Energy Analysts. Spanning an impressive 800,000ft² over 33 floors, the $220 million structure created a building that exemplifies the rare combination of architectural flair and sustainable engineering.
The House at Cornell Tech, New York, NY
The House at Cornell Tech is a 270 foot tall residential tower on Roosevelt Island in New York City. It is the world’s tallest and largest residential Passive House building and also achieved LEED Platinum certification. BuroHappold Engineering provided multi-disciplinary engineering services to achieve Passive House, a rigorous international building standard that results in dramatically reduced energy consumption and operational energy savings while providing superior comfort and indoor air quality.
Sustainability Pavillion, Dubai, UAE
Expected to welcome 25 million visitors from hundreds of countries over its six month duration, Expo 2020 Dubai will celebrate human ingenuity. Designed to create an immersive educational experience, the Sustainability Pavilion will promote ecology, sustainable technologies and design. The Pavilion’s core building features an 86,000ft² exhibition space that includes an auditorium, courtyard and reservoir. The buildings will contain solar energy, water harvesting and innovative materials in a context that is unique to the region.
